Weekly Report 3: 09/02/2018 to 09/10/2018
This past week, I had my first interview in the ISM II program. Mr. Chris Brooks from FastSigns surprisingly shared more about the fundamentals of business than graphic design at this interview. While understanding drawing and design principles can be helpful when creating concept sketches with clients, Mr. Brooks’ occupation consists more of working individually with each company to construct a marketing plan. Seeing how personalized each project was illustrated the idea that having one’s own company allows one to be more flexible. This sparked an idea to begin studying more about entrepreneurship and the business side of creative advertising. While art and digital media is fascinating, using editing systems can be taught online through YouTube. I would like to focus more of my interviews and independent study on business ownership and management in the upcoming weeks in order to determine which route of this field that I will be studying.
Mr. Brooks shared a lot of advice for my mum challenge as well. His ideas for how to multiply sales by selling the concept in a package to other student councils provided so much insight into the mind of a professional consultant. Mr. Brooks’ stories about his experience in starting two companies and reaching out to potential clients seemed like something I could completely envision myself doing. While I know very little about business, the gist of Mr. Brooks’ work in managing the FastSigns company while still working individually with clients seemed to be exactly what I have been trying to find but cannot figure out. This week’s research will be spent expanding on the concepts which Mr. Brooks shared, allowing myself to delve deeper into entrepreneur essentials in the creative field.
