Weekly Report 7: 09/30/2018 to 10/08/2018
On Wednesday, Frisco ISD ISM students gathered at Independence High School for the Business Symposium. Networking with a plethora of other ISM students and professionals in a wide variety of industries was helpful for practicing soft skills, and building connections not only with those in the industry which one aspires to enter but also with professionals in other fields forms relationships which can connect one to a greater network of people.
At the event, I had the opportunity to both be interviewed by professionals and interview new ISM students. Learning more about these students’ aspirations for the program inspired myself to set specific goals for what I want to gain and produce this year. While I have finally decided to combine my two potential topics into one, overarching theme of creative advertising and entrepreneurship, it is still necessary to delve deeper into digital mediums and understand how to create online content using digital tools. My research plans are to begin familiarizing myself with programs like Adobe Creative Cloud and Final Cut Pro in order to procure the necessary skills for a graphic designer.
Additionally, at the Business Symposium I met Mr. Clarence Williams, a supervisor for schools in Frisco ISD. Mr. Williams explained that being alive for the integration of public schools and experiencing first-hand the inequality in the American education system drove him to get involved as an educator himself, going on to become a principal and later a supervisor. His passion for equality and fairness in education became extremely evident in the service that he has provided through his roles, both paid and volunteer. Hearing Mr. Williams’ explanation for why he loves what he does truly motivated me to find a cause which I am passionate about to center all of my work around. For Mr. Williams, it is education. For Mr. Burns, it is young people. For my mother, it is the arts. For myself, I will need to discover that, and this program will greatly help.
