Where Dreams Come True

Weekly Report 04/17/2018 to 04/23/2018

This past week, I met with Mr. Kevin Haller and his communications director to discuss Frisco ISD safety procedures. He explained the difference between internal and external threats to the school, and how procedures are mainly to find a safe place and remain there or leave the school if possible. Mr. Haller also described the anonymous bullying report program which is being updated for next year to allow students from kindergarten through twelfth grade to anonymously text the Frisco Police Department and administrative safety directors and allow these people to text students back if they need more specific information about the tip.

These new procedures and old ones that are still being implemented are great starting points, but we discussed how difficult it is to prevent school shooters from knowing and predicting these safety measures since many shooters are current or past students. However, the new application that will allow for students to communicate back and forth with the police will hopefully help to prevent these incidents from happening by alerting the police of potential threats and helping to set up students with counselors and psychological treatment.

In addition, while at Disney World on the Fine Arts spring trip, I gained many new skills in patience and budgeting. While waiting in lines for rides like Rockin’ Rollercoaster and Space Mountain, I thought long and hard about guns. While visiting gift shops and attending Frozen sing-along events, I spent all of my energy and money contemplating the best solution to mass shootings. While booking fast passes for the Tower of Terror and Jungle Cruise, I was reminded of why I chose to study law this year. Disney has been a great experience to deal with angry parents and apathetic cast members. I learned a great deal about waiting patiently and dealing with cranky kids on a bus for too long. I will use these skills in my future ISM experiences in the professional world.
